Lesley Ann's Tip

“We use 10cm spacer brackets to allow plenty of air circulation between the wall and the trellis. Climbers can be planted either between the trellis and the wall or on the outside of the trellis and tied in. And for a free-standing trellis, we can supply steel posts that bolt behind the trellis, postcreted into the ground to keep the trellis from flexing.”

FAQs

What is a trellis and how does it help?

A trellis is a simple structure with an open grid framework that supports vertical plants against a wall or a fence. They can be made in a variety of materials but wooden trellises will rot over time; trellises made from thin uncoated metal will rust or break after a season or two; other inexpensive options made from plastic will only last a season. Our welded metal structures are elegant, last for ever and are fabricated to fit the space.

Our fan trellises have ribs that flare out in the shape of a fan to encourage horizontal as well as vertical growth (figs would look wonderful trained on a fan trellis). A fan trellis can be a good choice for a corner where two walls meet as it will encourage vines to grow on both. Like a square grid trellis, a fan trellis screens and is a good choice for privacy.

What size trellis do I want?

Getting the right size trellis is very important. Measure the wall or fence against which it will be positioned and decide whether you want an open or closed trellis and whether you want it wall-mounted or with feet in the ground. We can fabricate your trellis exactly to your specifications.

What are the best plants to grow on a trellis?

A fan trellis is a good support for any climbing perennials: vines, climbing roses, jasmines, clematis and honeysuckle are all shown off to their best advantage and, if they are trained horizontally, they will flower better. A trellis is an ideal way to cover an ugly wall or fence and a combination of deciduous and evergreen plants will give year-round cover.

How long does a trellis last?

Our welded metal trellises, made out of 12mm solid metal bar, will last a lifetime. Wooden trellises will rot over time; trellises made from thin uncoated metal will rust or break after a season or two; other inexpensive options are made from plastic and will only last a season. Our welded metal structures are elegant, long-lasting and are fabricated to fit the space.

How much support does a trellis need?

Our trellises can be either wall-mounted (where the weight of the trellis is supported by the wall) or ground mounted (where feet descend into the ground and can take much of the weight of the trellis above). We supply trellises with 10cm spacer brackets welded to the frame to allow air to circulate between the plants and the wall or even for the plants to be trained between the wall and the trellis.
